Born in 1944,
Thomas Giles lived a life that expressed his enthusiasm for the outdoors and wildlife. He has since passed away, but it seemed appropriate to present to you Thomas in his own words.

I was born in Ukiah, California , Mendocino County in 1944. Ukiah was and still is a small town tucked into a deep valley along the Russian River. My Mother's side of the family immigrated to Maine from Ireland in 1743, my Father's from Cornwall, England to Virginia City, Nevada for the Comstock Lode. Both families settled in Mendocino County, my mother's on a homestead in a remote area called Mina, my father's in Ukiah.

My father was an avid outdoorsman, taking my brother and me along on his fishing and exploring jaunts. Books by and about Thoreau and Muir, the outdooors and wilderness were early fodder for our young minds.

I have always felt deeply rooted in the North Coast, its rivers, forests and accessible solitude. I believe my appreciation of the outdoors and its inhabitants is reflected in my paintings.
